La Porte Junior High Principal Dr. Mike Thomas was awarded the 2005 - 2006 Shattered Dreams Passionate Educator Award by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at their June 28 meeting in Austin. Thomas received the award for his work with the 2005 Shattered Dreams program while Associate Principal at La Porte High School. David Drake, former Principal at La Porte High School and now Assistant Superintendent for Administration was also a nominee for the award. Jake Evans, a La Porte EMS paramedic, was a nominee for the Shattered Dreams Public Servant Award.

The Passionate Educator Award honors exceptional school employees who have worked feverishly in their school to make the Shattered Dreams program a success. The winner is recognized for their passion of education and love for students that drives them to promote programs in their school that will raise awareness about underage drinking and drinking and drinking and driving among their students.

Shattered Dreams is a two day, school-based program that promotes responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving.
