School Health Advisory Council

Vision: La Porte ISD students, staff, and community members living healthy and productive lives as the result of increased awareness for components of healthy living and access to health care resources.

Mission: The La Porte ISD School Health Advisory Council strives to improve student and staff performance by promoting age-appropriate wellness programs and healthy, balanced, and active lifestyles.

The School Health Advisory Council met on November 26th at 6:00 p.m. The Council accomplished organizational tasks including the following:

  • Chairperson - Jo Johnson, Community Representative

  • Secretary - Mondee Dugué, La Porte HS counselor

  • Staff facilitator - David Knowles, Director of Instructional Support Programs

The Council reviewed recent changes in legislation that impact school health programs, including physical fitness assessments for all students in grade 3-12, requirement for 30 minutes (average) of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day for students in grades K-6 (7th and 8th graders must meet the 30 minute requirement during two of the four semesters), the requirement for a coordinated school health program in middle schools (6,7,8). The Council recommended that the district select Healthy & Wise/Spark for our coordinated middle school health program.

The Council also set some priorities for the year, including the following:

  • Continue to encourage broad-based participation from the community on our Council, especially parent representatives from the Hispanic and African-American groups.

  • Develop a scope and sequence for sexuality education and provide guidelines for health teachers to use at each level for age-appropriate sexuality education.

  • Review district nutrition guidelines.

  • Support the district initiative to improve health care for uninsured children by offering vouchers for doctor visits.

The next meeting will on February 25th, 6:00.
