On Wednesday and Thursday, March 12 and 13, six orchestras from La Porte High School, Lomax Junior High School, and La Porte Junior High School competed in the UIL Region X Concert and Sightreading Contest. The event was held at Baytown Sterling High School. Two panels of UIL Judges awarded five different ratings during the two day event, ranging from superior to poor. Participating groups performed two selections from the UIL Prescribed Music List based on school size and one selection of the director's choice. After the concert performance a piece of music that the group had never played before was also required for rating by a separate panel of judges. Groups that received superior ratings in both concert performance and sightreading were awarded a UIL Sweepstakes Trophy, the highest award given by UIL.
Four LPISD orchestras were awarded UIL Sweepstakes Trophies: the La Porte High School JV/Sinfonia Non-Varsity Orchestra, LPHS Varsity Orchestra, La Porte Junior High School 8th Grade Orchestra, and the Lomax Junior High School 7th Grade Orchestra all were awarded superior ratings in both concert and sightreading. Both the La Porte High School JV/Sinfonia and Varsity Orchestras are under the direction of Dr. Geoff Carlton. The Lomax Junior High School 7th Grade Orchestra is under the direction of Cristina Reyes, and the La Porte Junior High School Orchestra is under the direction of Rachel Carlton.
