La Porte Bowling teams compete well in State Championship Tournament
Thursday, April 10th, 2008

The La Porte High School girl's and boy's varsity bowling teams competed in the State Championship Tournament for High School Bowling at Copperfield Lanes in Houston.  The girl's team was making its second straight trip to the state tournament.  The boy's team was competing in its first state tournament.

The La Porte girls improved on their 17th place at last year's tournament by placing 15th in this year's qualifying rounds and making the 16 team playoff.  The first round of playoffs consisted of the best of three games. The Bulldogs, seeded 15th, bowled against the 2nd seed from Plano South High School.  The Bulldogs won the first game (137-128) but dropped the second game (160-127), which set up the winner-take-all third game.  The La Porte girls kept pace with the Plano South girls until the last frame in which Plano South was able to take the game by a slim margin of five pins (148-143).  Members of the girls' varsity bowling team that competed at the state tournament were Brynn Witte, Lauren Bittler, Ashley Price, Lindsay Waters, and Ana Gonzalez.

The La Porte High boys were very close in their first appearance at the state tournament as they missed the 16 team playoff with a 19th place finish.  The La Porte boys surprised a lot of the veteran high school teams with their outstanding performance in the qualifying rounds.  Members of the varsity team that competed at the state tournament were Justin McDonald, Zyne Mendez, Travis Williams, Corey Williams, Kevin Benson, and David Johnson.

In the individual portion of the state tournament, Brynn Witte placed 11th in the Girls' Singles Division.  Brynn qualified for the round of 16 with a solid 592 series (200, 212, and 180). Although Brynn posted a 600 series in the first playoff round, she was unable to advance past the round of 16.  In the first playoff round, which was the best of three games, against Caney Creek's Kristen Davis, Brynn lost the first game 256-213, won the second game 222-211, but lost the third game 237-221.  Justin McDonald and Travis Williams were participants the Boys Singles Division.  The bowling team was coached by John Mullins and Kathy McDonald.
