La Porte ISD announces secondary dress code for 2008-09
Friday, August 1st, 2008

La Porte ISD has announced the secondary dress code for the 2008-09 school year.

Backpacks for LPISD junior high and high school students must be made of material that allows the contents to be visible.  Clear or mesh backpacks are required.  Backpacks that do not meet this requirement will not be allowed on campus.

Other highlights of the secondary dress code include the following:
Clothing shall be cinched at the waist.  Baggy pants that sag or do not sit on the waistline, hip-hugger or low-rise jeans/pants/skirts/shorts are not permitted.  Tie wraps that cinch the pants at the waist will be provided for students that do not have a belt.

Hair shall be clean, neatly groomed, and non-distracting.  No unnatural hair coloring, designs cut into the hair or Mohawks will be allowed.

Pierced jewelry is to be worn in the ears only; no facial piercing will be allowed.  Covering a visible piercing will not bring a student into compliance with the dress code.

All clothing, including shorts, skirts and dresses, cannot be shorter than one inch above the knee.  Slits, flaps and other openings in skirts must meet the same criteria for all clothing in length.  Wearing leggings under these garments does not put a student in compliance.

La Porte High School students are required to wear garments with hemmed sleeves.  Jackets/sweaters or similar coverings over sleeveless garments will not bring a student into compliance with the dress code.

All students must wear appropriate undergarments.  Necklines for tops cannot reveal cleavage, and male students may not wear sleeveless tops, T-shirts or jerseys without a sleeved garment underneath.

Clothing shall be clean and in good repair with no holes.  This includes jeans and pants with holes.

Sunglasses, hats, bandannas, gloves or any head/hand coverings are not allowed indoors.  Head coverings worn indoors will be confiscated.  Tattoos and/or any other drawings on the skin must be covered at all times.

Prohibited items include chains (such as billfold chains and chains on pants), pajama pants or sleepwear, blankets, house shoes, baggy pants/shorts or athletic shorts, body suits, bike pants, leggings, and tight or cotton sweat pants.  Undergarments worn as outer garments will not be permitted, nor will writing on the seat/bottom area of shorts or pants or other garments.

Items that are not allowed also include items with pictures, emblems, or writings on jewelry that are lewd, offensive, vulgar or obscene; advertise or depict tobacco products,  alcoholic beverages, drugs, weapons, violence, satanic symbols, blood or death; and/or are evidence of membership or affiliation in any gang, unauthorized club or organization.  Examples include bandanas, shirts with known gang members' pictures or gang emblems, skulls and satanic symbols.

See-through garments and clothing that allows undergarments to be exposed or bares the midriff will not be permitted.  If a student's undergarments or midriff can be seen when the arms are raised above the head, the clothing is too short.

The complete LPISD secondary dress code is available on the district web site.  For more information, call your child's school.
