Hurricane Ike Recovery Update
10-15-08
La
Porte ISD continues to recover from Hurricane Ike, and our thoughts are
with our families who have been impacted by the storm.
LPISD welcomed students back to
school on Monday, Sept. 29. Twelve instructional days were lost as a
result of the hurricane evacuation and recovery.
After exploring
several options for regaining the lost instructional time, LPISD
decided to change the Oct. 9 and 10 early release days and the Oct. 13
staff development day/student holiday to full instructional days. In
addition, the school day was extended on the following schedule
beginning Oct. 13:
Elementary Schools--8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (day extended by 30 minutes)
Baker Sixth-Grade Campus--8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (day remains the same with incorporation of guided learning time, "Bear Time," from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m.)
Lomax and La Porte Junior Highs--8:15 a.m. to 4:06 p.m. (day extended by 21 minutes; instructional day
had already been extended for 2008-09)
La Porte High School--7:20 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (no late start on Wednesdays; day extended by 30 minutes)
De Walt School--7:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. (no late start on Wednesdays; day extended by 30 minutes)

Updated Bus Stop Information
In
collaboration with students, teachers, and parents, LPISD has made a
change to the Wednesday high school schedule for the second semester.
At the beginning of the second semester, high school students will
resume the late-start schedule on Wednesdays but will continue to end
the school day at 3 p.m. According to LPHS principal Joanne Kolius,
the late start will enable the school to recapture the tutorial time
prior to 9 a.m. as well as the common planning time for teachers.
During this time, regular tutorials as well as TAKS tutorial sessions
are offered. This also will enable the school to resume the modified
block schedule, with 90-minute classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Clean-up,
stabilization, sanitation, and restoration efforts at Bayshore
Elementary are ongoing. Because of damage to Bayshore, arrangements
were made to welcome students at other LPISD elementary schools (Superintendent Graham's Letter to Bayshore Parents).
La Porte ISD's
Nutrition Department was pleased to provide free tray breakfasts and
lunches to all students through Oct. 10. Beginning Oct. 13, regular
meal payments resumed. In addition, the Nutrition Department has
extended the 30-day grace period for submitting free- and reduced-price
meal applications. Parents in households participating in the program
last year must turn in a new application by Nov. 17 in order to
continue to receive benefits. Parents who wish to participate in the
free and reduced-price meal program for 2008-09 may submit an
application at any time during the school year. Applications are
available at all campuses and the LPISD Nutrition Office, located at
802 San Jacinto. The Nutrition Office phone number is 281-604-6950.
