Nine La Porte High School Orchestra members earned top honors during the Oct. 25 Region XIX All-Region Orchestra tryouts at Pasadena Memorial High School. Auditioning students chose whether to try out for the Symphony All-Region Full Orchestra or the Philharmonic String Orchestra.
Those making the All-Region Symphony Orchestra include Robert Green, first, string bass; Chanse Parra, seventh, string bass; David Giang, fifth, cello; Amanda Ladd, who made the second violin section; and Michael Walters, who made the viola section.
Four students made the All-Region Philharmonic Orchestra. Giovanni Fuentes placed second on first violin; Bailiegh Bostick and Joseph Redd were named to the second violin section; and Kellie Roop placed in the cello section.
La Porte orchestra students will compete for chairs in playing tests based on the concert music with other students who were named to the orchestra. The tests will occur prior to the All-Region Orchestra performance in January 2009.
Thirty orchestra students from La Porte High School attended the All-Region tryouts. In addition to LPISD, Region XIX is made up of school districts on the east side of the Houston Metro area and includes students from Humble, Deer Park and Pasadena.
Students trying out for the Symphony Orchestra also qualified to attend All-State Recording auditions, and Robert Green and Michael Walters participated. All qualifying orchestra students from Texas are judged by panels of judges comprised of orchestra directors from across the state. The panels choose students for two All-State Full Symphony Orchestras and an All-State String Orchestra.
