Michael Reedy, a senior in the La Porte High School career and technical education marketing education program, won first place at the District 3 Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) competition. Michael competed in the full service restaurant management event and advanced to the state DECA competition held Feb. 19 through 21 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
At the District 3 level, Michael competed against students from 54 school districts. At the state competition, competitors will include those from 250 other schools.
Michael is the son of Cheryl and Mike Reedy.
Nekeba George, LPHS DECA sponsor, explained that the full-service restaurant management competition is specifically for students employed in the restaurant industry. Currently working at Gringo's, Michael is interested in pursuing a degree in business, with his ultimate career goal to start and operate his own restaurant.
According to George, Michael has successfully completed a "coherent career pathway while at LPHS by taking courses in marketing, food production and career preparation, or co-op." He is also currently enrolled in two evening dual-credit career and technical education courses at San Jacinto College.
