Bayshore Elementary School receives $6,000 grant from Laura Bush Foundation
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

La Porte ISD's Bayshore Elementary School has received a $6,000 grant from The Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries to purchase books for the school library.

According to Bayshore principal Patricia Herrera-Johnson, grants were written to address specific library needs on campus. The Bayshore grant was awarded to improve the library selection, specifically in the fiction and Spanish collections.

Our new library is an excellent, complete core library, and the additional books provided by this the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries will be a great supplement to what we already have," Herrera-Johnson said. "I could not be more excited about this grant. Our students will enjoy and benefit from the new books that we will receive."

Grants from The Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries were made to school libraries across the country. According to a Foundation press release, 188 school libraries are being awarded $1,098,634 in grants for 2010.

Schools will receive grants of up to $6,000 to expand, update and diversify their library book collections. Thirty-five schools in Texas were awarded the grants.

The Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries was founded in 2002 as a fund of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. Since its inception, the Laura Bush Foundation has awarded more than $7.3 million to 1,433 schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. In addition to these yearly grants, the Foundation has also awarded more than $5.7 million to school libraries in the Gulf Coast region to rebuild their library book collections that were lost or destroyed by hurricanes or storms.

The grant application process is administered by The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region with guidance from The Laura Bush Foundation's Advisory Committee. The grants are funded through generous donations to the endowment from individuals, corporations and foundations.

The mission of the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries is to support the education of the nation's children by providing funds to update, extend and diversify the book and print collections of America's school libraries. Further information is available at www.laurabushfoundation.org.
