Former and current La Porte High School coaches, football players and fans gathered in La Porte ISD's new Physical Education Center Friday night to pay tribute to retired head football coach and athletic director Carroll Lundin.
The district held the Aug. 27 reception in his honor following Lundin's election to the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor this summer. The event was held prior to the Bulldogs' first home game of the season.
Following Superintendent Lloyd Graham's welcome, LPISD athletic director Todd Schoppe shared memories of playing for Lundin, and Bill Snead, president of the LPISD Board of Trustees, followed with memories of coaching with him. City Councilman Mike Clausen read a proclamation declaring Aug. 27, 2010, as Carroll Lundin Day in La Porte, and Barbara Lewis of Senator Mike Jackson's office delivered a proclamation from Senator Jackson.
Pat Studdert of Buffalo Marine Services presented Lundin with a keepsake football, and former Superintendent John Sawyer delivered the closing remarks.
A bronze plaque commemorating Lundin's election to the Hall of Honor is displayed in the foyer of the Physical Education Center, next to the Athletics Office. Lettering on the back of the Bulldog Field House also proclaims La Porte as "Home of Carroll Lundin, THSCA Hall of Honor."
Lundin joined the LPISD family in 1974 as head football coach and athletic director. In his 14 years as head football coach, his teams won eight dist5rict championships or earned state playoff berths, with a record of 107-47-1. His overall coaching record was 139-53-2 with 11 district championships or state playoff berths.
