Bacterial Meningitis at La Porte Elementary Statement

A student at La Porte Elementary has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. La Porte ISD has been working closely with the chief epidemiologist at Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services, and because of the child’s age and nature of the illness, preventative treatment has been recommended by HCPHES for some children who have come in classroom contact with the child. A general letter from Principal Jewel Whitfield went home with all La Porte Elementary students yesterday, and students who may have been in close contact with the child received separate letters from Ms. Whitfield and HCPHES explaining that they should contact their health care provider for preventative treatment. Please note that the preventative treatment was recommended by HCPHES only for children who may have been in close contact, and those parents were notified separately. Please be assured that the district is following HCPHES recommendations. |
