La Porte High School students swept the awards in the District 8 Skills USA auto refinishing competition held Feb. 11 at San Jacinto College-South. The students, under the direction of teacher Valentin Trevino, earned the district championship for the third consecutive year.
Senior Kolten Dunkerson again won first place in the Year 2 competition. As a junior last year, Kolten competed in the Year 2 contest even though he was completing only his first year of instruction. He placed first in both district and state competition and earned fourth place at nationals in Kansas City in June 2010.
Other Year 2 award winners for 2011 include senior Omar Cantu, second; senior Anthony Rios, third; and senior Daniel Lerma, fourth.
In the Year 1 competition, junior Dalia Mendiola won first place. Other winners include sophomore Damian Garcia, second; sophomore Jesse Villalobos, third; and sophomore Devin Davis, fourth.
Kolten and Dalia will now advance to the state competition in Corpus Christi March 31 through April 2.
