The La Porte High School varsity girls' track team tied for the 21-5A district championship at the district track meet held on April 11 and 13. La Porte shares first-place honors with North Shore HIgh School, and 10 LPHS students will advance to the regional meet May 2 and 3 in Humble ISD.
"The girls found themselves behind 84 to 44 after the first day of field events, and as much as 55 points behind during the meet, with only four events left," said head coach Joel Fagan. But the LPHS girls persevered, fiinishing at or near the top in a number of the final events to earn the first-place tie.
In the 200-meter race, Daevonna Goodeau finished fourth, while North Shore won the event. Next came the 300 hurdles, with Imani Mark placing first, Alexus Brown finishing second, and Danielle Sowell taking fifth to earn 20 points in that event.
In the next event, the 1600-meter race, Meagan Lindsay placed second, Arielle Price finished third, and Anna Richburg took fourth, for a total of 18 points. Coming into the last event, the LPHS girls were behind by 16 points, but the 4 X 400 relay team made the best ofthe must-win situation. Daevonna Goodeau, Montrell Freeman, Alexus Brown and Imani Mark completed the relay in 3:55.
"It was a great team effort and extremely hard-fought battle," Fagan said. "The girls never gave up and ran great."
