Three La Porte High School students have been named 2011 Jones Scholars by Houston Endowment. Jamarcus T. Erskin, Khadijah A. Erskine and Elizabeth C. Shapiro are among 322 Houston area graduating seniors who are eligible to receive up to $16,000 in scholarship funds toward a baccalaureate degree.
The Rotary Club of Houston committee selects Jones Scholars based on academic achievement, economic need, leadership skills, community service and character. Seniors in all participating high schools in Harris County can apply at their high schools to become a Jones Scholar.
Houston Endowment, a philanthropic foundation established in 1937 by Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones, improves life for the people of the greater Houston area through its contributions to charitable organizations and educational institutions. Since 1958, the foundation has given more than $87 million to help 10,503 Jones Scholars attend college.
